Pet Vaccinations FAQs

Why Are Pet Vaccinations Important?

Vaccinations help protect pets from serious and sometimes fatal diseases. They work by preparing the immune system to fight off infections like rabies, distemper virus, parvovirus, Bordetella and feline leukemia, calicivirus. Regular vaccinations reduce the spread of disease and improve overall community health. Whether it’s cat vaccinations or dog vaccinations, timely immunization keeps your pet safe and helps them live a longer, healthier life.

When Should My Pet Be Vaccinated?

Puppies and kittens usually start their vaccination series around eight weeks of age. They receive boosters every four weeks until they’re about four months old. Adult pets need regular boosters depending on the vaccine and their risk of exposure. At every annual physical, our animal hospital will re-assess the vaccination schedule and make sure it’s still tailored to your pet’s specific needs.

What Vaccines Are Required?

Some vaccines are considered core, meaning they are recommended for all pets regardless of lifestyle. These include rabies, distemper, leptospirosis, parvovirus for dogs, and rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia and rabies for cats. Rabies is required by law in Ontario. Other vaccines are considered non-core and may be recommended based on factors like outdoor access, boarding plans, or travel. Our veterinarian near you will help you decide which vaccines make sense for your pet’s lifestyle.

Are Vaccinations Safe?

Vaccines used in veterinary care are tested for safety and effectiveness. Most pets experience no side effects. If any reactions occur, they are typically mild and short-lived, such as slight soreness or tiredness. Our clinic also follows Fear Free Certified practices to reduce stress during appointments, making the experience as comfortable as possible for your pet. However, as with humans, every pet is an individual, sometimes serious side effects could happen. Please discuss with our veterinarians if you have concerns with vaccines for your pets.

How Can I Prepare My Pet For a Vaccination Appointment?

Make sure your pet is calm and rested before the visit. Bring any records from previous vet visits, especially if you are new to our clinic. We use gentle handling techniques, soothing environments, and a calm approach that reflects our commitment to Fear Free Certification. This helps ensure that your pet stays relaxed during their visit to the animal hospital. Try to bring your pets’ favourite treats, or bring them a little hungry. This way the treats we give them become high value and will work well as a distraction for them. When they don’t focus on the physical exam and needles, it becomes a very positive visit for them. For some highly stressed pets, we dispense oral sedation to be given at home, this helps to set them up for a stress-free visit.
