Pet Vaccinations

Vaccinations play a vital role in keeping your pet healthy and protected from serious illnesses. Whether you have a new puppy, a senior cat, or any pet in between, vaccines prevent diseases that can be costly and sometimes fatal. At Chicopee Hills Animal Hospital in Kitchener, ON, our team provides individualized care to help your pet stay healthy and safe year-round.

Pet Vaccinations

Core and Non-Core Vaccines

Core vaccines are recommended for all pets, regardless of lifestyle or location. For dogs, these include vaccines for rabies, leptospirosis, distemper, parainfluenza and parvovirus. For cats, these include rabies, panleukopenia, and calicivirus. Non-core vaccines, on the other hand, are based on your pet’s risk factors, such as time spent outdoors, boarding, or contact with other animals. These may include protection against Lyme disease, Bordetella, or feline leukemia.

When to Vaccinate Your Pet

Most pets begin their vaccinations as puppies or kittens, starting at eight weeks old. Boosters are administered after the initial shots in a series over the next few months until 16 weeks to further strengthen immunity. Adult pets require regular boosters; this vary depending on the vaccine and your furry companion’s needs.

Following a Consistent Schedule

It is important to follow a consistent vaccination schedule recommended by our veterinarian. Skipping or delaying vaccines can leave your pet vulnerable to preventable illnesses. We recommend at least yearly physical exams at which time our vets assess your cat or dog’s overall health and adjust its immunization plan as needed. A lot of vaccines have been shown to be effective for at least three years when given properly, so we assess every pet individually when giving vaccines.

Possible Side Effects

Most pets handle vaccines well, though mild side effects like soreness or tiredness may occur. These usually go away within a day. However, if you notice anything unusual or if your pet seems to be experiencing discomfort for an extended period, let our team know so we can address it promptly.
