Summer Safety

Keeping Your Pet Sun Safe

With temperatures rising, both humans and our beloved pets are eager to bask in the warmth of the sun. While we ensure our own protection with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses, it's important not to overlook the need to safeguard our furry companions from the sun and heat.

Here are some essential tips to keep your pet safe and comfortable during the summer months:

Preventing Heatstroke:

As temperatures soar, pets are susceptible to heatstroke, making prevention crucial:

  1. Provide Adequate Hydration: Ensure your pet has access to plenty of fresh, cool water at all times. Proper hydration is key to preventing heat-related issues.
  2. Avoid Midday Heat: Plan outdoor activities such as walks and play sessions during the cooler parts of the day, preferably in the morning or evening. If this is unavoidable, shorten your outdoor time.
  3. Never Leave Pets in Hot Cars: Avoid leaving pets in parked vehicles, even for short periods, as temperatures inside can quickly become dangerously high.
  4. Consider Breed-Specific Needs: Certain breeds, such as those with short snouts, brachycephalic breeds such as Frenchies, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers etc are more vulnerable to heatstroke due to their smaller airway. Take extra precautions with these breeds.
  5. Water Play: Incorporate water activities into your pet's routine to help them stay cool and refreshed.

Recognizing the signs of heatstroke is crucial for prompt intervention. Symptoms may include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, disorientation, collapse, vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool area and seek veterinary assistance immediately.

Protecting Against Sunburn and Paw Burns:

Just like humans, pets require protection from the sun's harmful heat and rays:

  1. Limit Sun Exposure: Keep pets indoors or in shaded areas during peak sun hours (10 am to 4 pm) to reduce the risk of sunburn. Sunburn in pets can lead to inflamed sore skin, and more rarely, skin cancer.
  2. Apply Pet-Safe Sunscreen: If sun exposure is unavoidable, use a pet-friendly sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) on exposed areas such as the nose, ears, and belly. This is especially important for our lightly pigmented breeds and hairless breeds. Avoid sunscreens containing zinc, which can be toxic if ingested.
  3. Check Pavement Temperature: Before walks, test the pavement temperature with your hand. If it feels hot to you, it's too hot for your pet's paws and could cause painful burns.

By following these guidelines, you can help keep your furry family members safe and healthy throughout the Summer season. Remember, a little precaution and preparation goes a long way in ensuring a happy and sun-safe pet.
