Ticks: What You Need to Know!

The Facts:

  • Warmer weather means ticks are migrating at a rate of 40km per year and are a growing threat to our region

  • Ticks are in Ontario

  • Kitchener-Waterloo area is now considered an endemic area for Lyme Disease

  • Ticks carry many diseases such as Lyme Disease

  • Ticks are active whenever the temperature is above 4° C

  • Your dog can pick up ticks anywhere…even in your backyard

  • Controlling ticks on your dog will help prevent the spread of Lyme Disease to humans


What you can do:

  • Have your dog’s blood tested annually for Heartworm infection, Lyme disease and 2 other tick borne diseases

  • Give your dog tick prevention all year:

  1. Bravecto is a chewable tablet given once every 12 weeks to prevent ticks and fleas
  2. K9 Advantix is a topical solution applied to your dog’s skin once monthly *toxic to cats when product is wet – use caution if you have a cat
  • Vaccinate your dog – we now have an effective Lyme vaccine which can be given annually

  • Check your dog frequently for ticks, especially after being in bushy or grassy areas

  • Feline tick prevention will be available in Canada soon

  • Remove ticks promptly being careful to remove the mouth parts – place in a ziploc bag & bring to us for species identification – WE OFFER COMPLIMENTARY TICK IDENTIFICATION
